ADOPTING and OLDER PUP or ADULT DOG:

Each stage of a dog's life has advantages and disadvantages, so it really comes down to what matters most to you. Adopting a puppy is like welcoming a toddler into your home. Only with the potential of half-eaten shoes. Accidents on the floor, half-swallowed sock, shredded toilet paper are only tolerable an days because a puppy is so dag-gone cute. Babies require boundless energy for the first 6 months to two years of a pups life.

The first year or so of a puppy’s life usually incurs the most medical cost; probably $500 - $1500. Whereas older pups and adults usually only need routine checkups and care, assuming the health has been properly attended to in the early years.

Always ask why one is relinquishing the older dog or pup to make sure you aren’t taking on bad behavior because of someone else’s mistreatment or illnesses because of medical neglect.

An active lifestyle might be more suitable for an older pup or dog. If they are fully vetted and cared for they will not be susceptible to viruses that might attack a weaker or unimmunized pup. And you won’t have to wait for a young pup’s joints to become strong enough to take more strenuous activity. If you are getting an older pup or dog that is current with vaccines and well socialized, you can’t take them about anywhere you want.

You may want to consider the life expectancy of a dog when you adopt an older dog though. They will be beyond the many puppies needs but periodontal and joint deterioration is a consideration. An elderly dog might not give you many years and just might hit the pocketbook hard as well.

I personally have never meet a person to regret adopting an older pup or dog. So if you don’t want to start from scratch an older pup or dog might be suitable for you. Below you will find some options od older pups and dogs that either are or will become available.

Pebbles has served our breeding program well. She is only 5 years old (DOB 4/6/2019) and still has plenty of energy and life. Pebbles would be great for a kid home as she adores my grandkids. Pebbles is crate and leash trained and doesn't have any inhibitions or bad habits.

If you are interested in giving Pebbles a deserved life of luxury please fill out the application on the upper left and send it to SherryDyeStandards@yahoo.com.

Mocha is a very sweet, loved girl. She is a beautiful sable and on the smaller side for a Standard. She is 5 1/2 years old (DOB 7/7/2018). Mocha was raised primarily by my granddaughter so she has a vested interested of who gets her and will want periodic updates - at least for a while. She has been a great doggie mom and delighted many families with lovely babies. It is time for her to retire and enjoy a life of luxury.                                                                                                                                                                                        If you are interested in giving Mocha a permanent home, you can clip and paste and submit the application on the upper left and send it to SherryDyeStandards@yahoo.com
